.332 DDR

Description

.332 DDR is an improved 5.56-class cartridge that uses a sabot and bore diameter of .332 inches. It is a 5.56mm case necked out to the maximum possible diameter at the shoulder while retaining original case taper. In this incarnation, it will fit in all 5.56mm magazines, however the sabot makes possible a number of variations in caliber and bullet weight that may not be compatible with original 5.56mm magazines.

In addition to increasing the versatility of any 5.56mm platform, the .332 DDR is also quieter than 5.56, producing only around 145dB (via my estimates) out of a 16" barrel versus 5.56's 160dB from the same barrel. That means the .332 DDR is about a fourth as loud, with no sound moderation, than 5.56, making it ideal for domestic defense.

This particular illustration shows a proposed affordable Hornady defensive load, having a zinc-coated steel case, nylon sabot, and proven 75gr OTM bullet. This would retail for about $15 per box of 20. Another proposed variation is for an affordable "plinking" load in partnership with Barnaul ammunition plant in Russia, which would feature a similar steel case, less expensive bullet, and would retail for about $5 per box of 20

Eh, 145dB will still shred your ears.
